I always ask couples to give me a brief description of their wedding when we start talking so I have a better idea of what they are planning. I just want a sense of their aesthetic and the vibe they’re trying to achieve. When Elizabeth wrote back to me about her and John’s wedding at The Harvard Club in NYC, she summed it up in three words – COZY, LIBRARY, PARTY!
Library themed wedding? Count me in! I grew up in my local library and met some of my oldest and dearest friends there.
The theme all makes perfect sense since Elizabeth and John met in the publishing world. John went on to become and English teacher, while Elizabeth remains an editor.
You might think they would settle for the overall library look and feel provided by the Harvard Club, but no…they went a few steps further!
Each table was named after a book Elizabeth had edited, and the HAND MADE escort cards featuring utterly gorgeous calligraphy were also bookmarks!!
This is why I find it so critical to get to know the couples I work with beforehand. Sure, I got to know Elizabeth and John during their engagement session. I saw how they interacted with one another, but by asking them about what was important to them and how they wanted their wedding to ‘feel’ for their guests, I received a greater insight into what photos would matter to them from their wedding.
And there were the other, smaller details that would have little emotional value to most of the guests or to the casual viewer of their photos, like the handkerchief Elizabeth embroidered for John, or the cufflinks he wore that belonged to his late grandfather. Or their cake topper, which, in their words, is ‘pretty dope’…
