“We just want a small city hall wedding and a celebration with some of our close friends!”
Not everybody wants to do a big gathering for their wedding. They prefer something smaller and more intimate. But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have great photos!
I’ve done dozens of New York City ‘city hall’ weddings – just so you know, they don’t actually take place at city hall in NYC – they take place at the marriage bureau (in Manhattan and the other boroughs).
It’s not uncommon, since I’ve photographed over 500 weddings, for me to offer advice and answer questions for couples since I’ve been there and done that — not only as a photographer but planning my own wedding — and they haven’t!
When it comes to a city hall wedding, I find myself offering a bit more advice, since, it doesn’t run the same as a ‘normal’ wedding. There’s a lot of bureaucratic red tape to go through, and if you don’t know what to expect, it can be confusing.
I can tell you how long to expect to be waiting in line, what the process is going to be like, approximately how long you’ll wait once we get done with all the paperwork, AND what days will take the longest to get through the lines.
Often, couples will contact me about their city hall wedding and say, “We just need somebody for half an hour…”
Let me tell you, half an hour is not going to cover your wedding, even at city hall…
