Same sex marriages in New York

So now New York State has legalized same sex marriage! Congratulations to all the couple out there who can now be legally bound together. Now you need a photographer…that’s where I come in.

same sex ceremony

I’ve photographed same sex ceremonies in the past and I am happy to photograph more.

Which brings me to another point. I have had several couples contact me about photographing same-sex weddings and most end their inquiry with “This is a same sex wedding, are you OK with that?” While I appreciate the notification that it is a gay wedding, I don’t have a problem with it. And it makes me sad because I think that means that somewhere along the line, a photographer or another vendor has said that they weren’t “OK” with it. The passage of same sex marriage in New York State is going to have a huge effect on the wedding industry and the economy of the state of New York – don’t believe me? Want to read more? Click here and check it out.

I don’t just photograph weddings…

I shoot plenty of other things. Weddings just happen to be what I focus on, no pun intended. Well, yes, pun slightly intended.

I also do:

  • Headshots for actors
  • Promotional photos for musicians and bands
  • Family portraits
  • Pet photography
  • Commerical and product photography
  • Senior / Graduation photos

And much more. Below are some photos I took for my long time friend, Joe Lunievicz, for the jacket cover of his new book, Open Wounds.

I would highly suggest you purchase a copy for yourself. Click here to find it on Amazon.

And if you need a photographer for something other than weddings. You can give me a call about that.

Joe Lunievicz - Casey,
These two pictures are terriffic! You shot so many good ones I can’t choose! Wait till you see the author shot on the book cover. It’s BIG. Really BIG. I love it.
Thanks,
Casey (aka: best photographer in the universe)

So I got married…

I have been away from the blog for a little while because…well, I got married.

Why does she put up with me? I might have mentioned something about the Zombie Apocalypse in the wedding vows…

So now I can get back to work, right? Not quite…not that I haven’t been working, I have been CRAZY busy since getting back. That is what taking a couple weeks off for a honeymoon will do to you. But before I completely shift gears back into marketing mode and showing off my work I wanted to take some time to thank the people who made our wedding possible.

The Photographers – Anthony Collins and Yariv Dotan

“Who did you get to take your wedding photos?” I heard this many times over the last year. Well, I got two trusted friends of mine who are not only great photographers but they are also great people. I love them dearly and they did an amazing job capturing our wedding.

The Venue – F.E.A.S.T. at Round Hill

Superb! Spectacular! First off, the location is gorgeous, a mansion up in the mountains – we also lucked out on the weather and got a beautiful day. The food was amazing (including the cake by The Pastry Garden) and the service was impeccable. Every time I turned around, someone handed me a drink. Now that’s what I call service!

The DJ – 74 Events

I’ve worked with Gary (aka DJ Gaza), the owner of 74 Events, many times and I refer him all of the time to couples that I work with. So when Caroline and I got engaged he was one of the first people I called. Gary, however, was already booked for our date but he set us up with his ‘second in command’, Constantine. All I can say is this – THEY ROCK! Gary was involved from start to finish in the planning process. Constantine balanced the emotional moments (I might have cried…a lot) with our energetic, drunken guests need to dance and when the time came, he blew the doors off the dance floor and gave us exactly what we wanted – a dance party!

The Flowers – Steven Bruce Design

Another vendor who I had worked with prior to our wedding who just blew me away. The flowers were stunning. Steve and his wife, Melissa, gave us everything that we hoped for and more. The week leading up to the wedding, Steve was emailing Caroline telling her how the flowers were coming along, not only reassuring her but building the excitement to see them!

The Bus – West Point Tours

The bus ride back to the hotel on the big yellow school bus may go down in history. Songs were sung, from the theme to The Jeffersons to Build Me Up, Buttercup (a request from the driver). Thankfully there are no pictures from this portion of the evening. So we will just end with this picture…

In conclusion, much fun was had by all – and if any of these vendors are reading this post…THANK YOU! I love you all, very much. Always work with people you like!

The Spider Holster

The single piece of equipment that I’ve had the most questions asked about? The Spider Holster. Caroline bought it for me for my birthday last year and ever since people walk up to me at weddings, events, on the street (even when I’m in the middle of a shoot) and ask what it is and many times where they can get one. Personally, I love it. It takes the weight of one of my cameras off my shoulders and I have quick access if I need it.

Spider Holster, Plate and Pin

The Spider Holster system consists of the Holster (above on the right), the Plate (on the left),  and the Pin (the Pin is screwed into the plate, it has the round ball on the end). There is also a belt which I will discuss later on.

Spider plate attached to camera base

The plate screws into the bottom of the camera with a hex screw. There is a supplied hex wrench (just like IKEA!) which slides into the plate for storage. I learned the hard way – do not store the hex wrench in the plate. It does not lock into position and can fall out. I keep mine in a bag (along with all of the components when not in use) so that I don’t lose it.

Spider Plate attached with pin

The plate sits flush against the camera, wrapping slightly over the edge of the base. This does mean that if you have a battery pack (like I do) that you can’t switch batteries without taking the plate off or loosening it. On the other hand, I’ve shot for 13 hours with two fully charged batteries so I doubt you would run into a situation that you’d need to switch them out as long as you charge up beforehand – which you should always do!

Spider Holster Pin

The pin then slides into the Holster unit, which also has a locking mechanism to keep your camera from falling out (which would be quite difficult) or a passerby from grabbing your camera (more likely). Below you can see the holster in the locked position.

Spider holster in locked position

I also like to attach the plate to the tripod mount of my telephoto lens. The lens and camera seem to balance perfectly and they don’t bounce around.

Spider plate attached to telephoto lens

spider holster attached to normal belt

You will notice that I’ve attached the Holster to my regular belt. I find it holds just fine (you must thread your belt through the holster to attach it securely). The Holster comes with a heavy duty belt which you can bolt your Holster to, or you can use any number of minor adjustments to use with other professional camera carrying belts such as LowePro and ThinkTank (more information is on the Spider Holster website).

You can get your own Spider Holster at the company’s website – www.spiderholster.com. Since I got mine, two of my second shooters have purchased their own. They have also come out with a lightweight model, The Black Widow, for smaller DSLR’s, point-and-shoot cameras, and small video cameras.

Jessica + James: King Kong Engagement Session

You may be wondering about the title of this post…more on that later. For now, enjoy some pictures from my ‘photo adventure’ with Jessica and James! We started off in Grand Central…

Then we headed down to the 7 train station…

Then on to Central Park!

And after that, James climbed the Empire State Building like King Kong, holding Jessica in his hand…what?!??!?!?

Here is how this came about…when Jessica, James and I were discussing ideas for their engagement photo session, James joked that I would be in a helicopter taking pictures of him hanging off the Empire State Building holding Jessica like King Kong. He may have been joking, but I told them I could make that happen – AND WITHOUT NEEDING A HELICOPTER! I took some photos of them in Central Park, composited them with a photo of the Empire State Building I took several years ago and here is the end result…

You gotta love Photoshop!

Wedding Wednesday: Engagement Photos | Jessica Lubin - [...] When James and I were talking to Casey about where to take photos, James suggested that Casey would be in a helicopter while James climbed the Empire State Building carrying me like King Kong. While that wasn’t feasible, Casey said that he could make it work. And he did with the magic of Photoshop. We took some photos in Central Park, Casey composited them together and voila! King Kong! [...]

dj ny - beautiful photos, classic New York City and really nice, warm color palettes.

Cynthia - You do such an awesome job. Please please tell me how you get your pictures so beautiful like that. and how do you do the king kong one and the trash the dress ones. What kind of program do you use? I’d love to become a photographer and do pictures like these. =)

Casey - Well Cynthia, years and years of experience, and some Photoshop. I’ve been a professional photographer for over 12 years and I’ve been using Photoshop for over 20…

My future wife knows everything…

I have been told it is good that I have come to this realization before the wedding, but it is true! Already this week she has whipped up homemade shrimp ravioli, recited Avogadro’s Number, and when I was babbling on trying to explain something about string theory she countered with, “I know what a tesseract is!” (those last two really made my nerd heart go pitter-pat, the first one – all I can say is DELICIOUS!)

But her crowning achievement this week is getting a response to our wedding from the White House.

White House Wedding Invitation Response

Would you also like to get a Presidential response to your wedding? Well, it is one of those “little known secrets” that I am happy to share with you. Simply send an invitation or a wedding announcement after your wedding to:

The President & Mrs. Obama
The White House
Greetings Office, Room 39
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20502

Allow six weeks to get your response back and if you plan on moving after the wedding, be sure to include both your new and old email addresses. And whatever intern hand addresses the response envelopes has fantastic handwriting! Here are a few other folks you can invite:

Mickey and Minnie Mouse
The Walt Disney Company
500 South Buena Vista Street
Burbank, California 91521

(for Catholics)
Pope Benedictus XVI
Prefettura della Casa Pontifica
00210 Citta del Vaticano, Italia

(for the British — you won’t get anything back unless you are a British citizen)
The Secretary to Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth II
Buckingham Palace
London, England SW1A 1AA

In other news, Tyler was suitably unimpressed.

Natalie M - That is so wonderful! I never knew you can get a response from the White House! And your future wife definitely knows everything. :)

Casey - Natalie, I thought it was pretty damn cool myself. Now we have to figure out how to get one from the Queen…

Anny + Chien: Country Asian Wedding

I had a great time photographing Anny and Chien’s wedding – it was certainly one of the most interesting days I have ever had: Early morning getting ready, quests/tasks for the groom to complete, two tea ceremonies, a “first of its kind in the U.S.” Buddhist wedding ceremony at the Queens County Farm Museum, followed by sparklers, completely vegan catering and barn dancing!

Enough of my yappin’, check out the pictures.

Marquina + Dan: Brooklyn Waterfront Wedding

What to say about Dan and Marquina’s wedding? The word “awesome” comes to mind but I use that a lot. How about double awesome? All this week a series of DIY projects used at the wedding have been posted on The Broke Ass Bride, courtesy of Kim over at Inspired Goodness, who designed the wedding.

So you can look over there for more detail photos and to learn how to do some of these projects yourself. Me? I’m posting photos from the wedding! Game on!
