I felt a slight hesitance at first. To geek or not to geek – that was the question.
Opening up to your wedding photographer can feel awkward for some people. But I am the person who is going to be around you for most of your wedding day – more than any other vendor. There needs to be a rapport. We need to understand each other, so that I can see what is important to you on the wedding day.
As we talked, they realized that I was one of them. I, too, am a geek.
And they opened up, telling me about their love of ‘geek culture’ – movies, TV shows, comics…the list went on and on, showing me photos of how they cosplay at New York Comic Con (my personal favorite were the Zod and Ursa costumes). We understood one another. We GOT each other. They felt comfortable.
That way, on the big day, I was able to capture them as they really are. I made sure to get lots of photos of the Doctor Who wedding cake. I made sure to get the portraits done so they had time to run upstairs and catch the opening of The Walking Dead premiere so they could see the resolution of that big cliffhanger – as well as all of the beautiful little moments that made up their amazing wedding.
There’s no need to worry.
There’s no judgment here.
Be a geek. Be nerdy. Be you.
I get you.
