Nikki + Ben: Trains, Pools, and Vintage Coke Bottles

Ben proposed to Nikki on the platform of the N train station at 36th Avenue, so it seemed like a fitting place for us to start our engagement session. They are going with a vintage theme for their wedding so I gave a few of their photos a more ‘vintage’ feel when I processed them.

Zaina + Ben: Who wants to ride the carousel?

So Zaina and Ben tell me, “We don’t like having our picture taken…We’re shy.”

I let them know that’s fine. I give them a few pointers.

I expect that it might take a little while for them to warm up. How was I to expect that after we left Grand Central (and I must say I was pretty amazed we got the shot of them that you will see below standing in the center of the main hall with no one in front of them) that the next 45 minutes would involve an ice cream cone, a ride on the carousel in Bryant Park (I didn’t even know there was a carousel in Bryant Park), and a re-creation of the V-J Day kiss in Times Square (in front of the 40 foot statue they put up to commemorate the anniversary). Thanks Zaina and Ben for bringing me along!

My Sidekick

As it is National Dog Day, I decided to take a moment out of my hectic schedule to talk about my dog, Tyler. We popped out of the apartment this morning for a quick self-portrait session…

Molly + Bjorn: The James Bond Wedding

When I first met with Molly and Bjorn, they told me how their relationship was based on a lie. Apparently, Bjorn told Molly that he knew how to use a particular piece of lab equipment which he had no idea how to use – just to get a chance to know her better. As you can see, this bit of misdirection has worked out well for them!

With Bjorn looking rather like a dashing Agent 007 (fitting that later on he entered the ceremony to the James Bond theme) and Molly stunning everyone in her Vera Wang gown (which I thought looked remarkably like Chelsea Clinton’s wedding gown when I saw photos from the first daughter’s wedding the next week), we set out through the city to Central Park, Grand Central Station, and then back to the Kimberly Hotel where the ceremony and reception were to take place. Molly and I nearly convinced Bjorn to take some portraits in her lab (something I think we should maybe go back and try later).  Upstairs at The Kimberly offered magnificent views of the Chrysler Building and the city all night long while the guest enjoyed some of Bjorn’s signature cocktails, including the delicious chocolate drink that served as the ‘cake’.

Many thanks to Molly and Bjorn, the folks at Upstairs, and my second photographer, Jeremy, for making the day (and evening) such a pleasure.

Crazy Awesome Brooklyn Graffiti

So I will be posting more photos from this and the other two engagement sessions I shot last Sunday, but I couldn’t wait to show this amazing panorama with some ridiculous graffiti from the DUMBO area of Brooklyn.

Trash the Dress Photoshoot Giveaway

Do you really plan on wearing your wedding dress again? Do you think that your daughter will want a dress in the same style 20 or 30 years from now?  Of course the answer to these questions could be yes, BUT I am thinking that maybe some recent brides out there want to show their husbands that they have absolutely no intention to use that dress again! And to that end, I am giving away two, yes TWO free Trash The Dress photo sessions in New York City.

free trash the dress photo session

Hair and makeup for the sessions is included and will be provided by Makeup by Jules

After the less than stellar response to the “Let’s Have Fun” giveaway – I am looking to make the process of submitting much simpler. All you have to do is email me with your name, contact information, and the date of your wedding. You must be married before the contest deadline to be eligible. You must also be willing to destroy your wedding dress in the process of the shoot. Deadline for submission is Labor Day – September 6th, 2010.

Tell anyone you know who is recently married who might be interested!

Nemesis Cat

Yes, he may seem all cute and cuddly, but this cat is…my nemesis!

deceptively cute looking cat

Whether he is nibbling on my toes while I sleep, reminding me that he still has claws, or finding new and more efficient ways of covering everything I own in his hair – Hockis is both diabolical and loveable…

Do not be confused, I do love him – though I am sure he is sitting just over my right shoulder at this moment…in the window…plotting my demise.

We have a winner! (Let’s Have Fun)

First, I would like to announce that we have a winner in the Let’s Have Fun photo shoot giveaway!

I would like to congratulate Vivian and Victor of Brooklyn – I will be doing some fun maternity photos with them in a couple weeks (if Vivian doesn’t have the baby first, fingers crossed).

I would also like to add that Vivian and Victor were the only people who entered the contest!!! What’s the deal? Do people not like free things? Was the process of entering too difficult? Seriously, I want to know because I enjoy giving things away…leave a comment, I need your feedback!

Alexis and George: Astoria, Central Park and Crest Hollow by way of Greece

It seems only logical that I would photograph Alexis and George’s wedding, George is from Astoria (where I have been living since the 1990’s) and Alexis is originally from Michigan (where I grew up) – nevermind that they live in Germany!

It was a crazy busy day, from getting ready photos to the ceremony in Astoria to portraits in Central Park to the reception on Long Island. Many thanks to my second photographer, Julian, for capturing some amazing shots as well. We had a great time and we learned a lot about Greek celebrations!

Reception Venue: Crest Hollow Country Club

Pre-Wedding Thank You Brownies

I must say I am a very lucky photographer – or at least that I have clients who know my weakness for sweets (perhaps I rave about my fiance’s baking of cheesecakes a bit)…

Thank you, Marquina and Dan for the AMAZING brownies from Fairytale Brownies and they are all natural! Luckily for me they are individually wrapped or my Wii Fit would have been groaning at me…

Jenna + Paul: Blowing in from the Windy City

Chicagoans Jenna and Paul were referred to me by a former client, and you know how I love my fellow Midwesterners. When they told me that the entire wedding and reception was taking place at The Church of the Holy Apostles, I imagined that there was some sort of event space attached to the church. Little did I know, and much to my amazement – the church has been refurnished without pews.

The chairs for the ceremony were used for the tables for dinner and the reception and dancing took place in the church, which I must say, made for some great photos! I was also treated to one of the funniest, and most touching Father of the Bride speeches I have ever heard by Jenna’s dad.

My Muse – My Rock

I don’t know where I would be without this woman! My fiance, Caroline, is truly my partner – she listens to me vent, she challenges me to be better (both as a photographer and as a person).

She bakes the most delicious cheesecakes! She encourages me to be a little bit different. And I love her…

Proposal Photography

I have been photographing proposals for about 5 years or so, and let me tell you – it is a lot of fun!

Whether I am hiding out in the park, pretending to be a tourist or tailing a couple in a cab – each proposal offers it’s own unique challenges – and rewards! I love to be with a couple from the beginning of their engagement through the wedding, I feel like I get to tell a more complete story.

And guys, those of you who didn’t know this was an option before you saw this post – give me a call if you are thinking about proposing. You will score major points if you hire me as your photographer. Hiring someone to take pictures means you put a lot of thought into planning the proposal!

Besides, don’t you want to have photos to remember the look she had on her face when you asked her to be yours forever?

Rachel + Stephen: A Sweet Farewell

It was, to say the least, a “balmy” day in Queens a couple of weeks ago when I photographed Rachel and Stephen’s wedding. However, we all managed to keep from melting (the ice cream truck at the end of the day helped with that) and had a great time. Many thanks to Rachel and Stephen for having me (and my second photographer, Jeremy) as part of their wedding.

Venue: Terrace on the Park
